Following the radiance of an enlightened and guiding Muslim state comes a period of doubt, tensions, and disagreements. Thought becomes less vibrant, ignorance looms. Then foreign powers arrive, challenging an arrogant dominance. Islam gradually ceases to be the state religion for all Muslims: as the caliphates decline, Muslims follow trade routes and settle in distant and foreign lands.
