The radiance of an enlightened and pioneering Muslim state is followed by a period of doubt, tension, and discord. Thought becomes less vibrant, and ignorance looms. Then come foreign powers that challenge the once-unquestioned dominance. Gradually, Islam is no longer the state religion for all Muslims: as the caliphates fade into decline, Muslims follow trade routes and settle in distant and foreign lands.
