Scattered across the world and living in regions with vastly different social, political, ideological, and religious contexts, 21st-century Muslims draw on this prestigious past while reinventing it daily. New ways of being in the world, new Muslim citizens, are emerging across the globe. New interpretations, new practices, and new individuals are revealed every day or are searching for new identities. Today’s Islam seeks above all to express and present itself as it truly is: at once humble, strong, and open to the world—resisting forces that aim to isolate Muslims or dissolve them into the confusion of a shapeless globalization.
