When the Prophet of Islam died in 632 CE, four caliphs succeeded one another at the head of the young and rapidly expanding state. They are known as the “Rightly Guided.” Their actions had concrete impacts on the many current practices of Islam. They were the first to begin essential work on the revelation transmitted by the Prophet: without a living guide, they turned to the text and began its first interpretations.
